BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) An unidentified 13 year old girl, who drowned in Cazenovia Creek Monday evening, risked and ended up losing her life as the result of helping another child struggling to keep their head above water.

A spokesman from Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo confirmed with Eyewitness News that the girl died Monday night after being brought to the hospital following this incident.

Lt. Mark Michelek told Eyewitness News, "the thirteen year old, the victim at Women and Children's Hospital, was able to assist that child and get that child from the water. She then got herself in trouble, some other individuals went to help her, they got in trouble."

After fifteen minutes of chaos and confusion, police arrived on the scene just as another bystander was able to bring the unconscious teen to shore.

Paramedics were able to bring back the girl's heartbeat, but she passed away Monday night at Women and Children's Hospital.

The portion of Caz Creek is a popular place to cool off, but the waters, falls, and the nearby Buffalo River have now claimed four young lives in the past few years.

Less than 24 hours after this latest tragedy, Eyewitness News cameras found children swimming in the same area.

A vigil for the girl is planned for Tuesday night.

Eyewitness News will continue to have the latest on this story as details become available.
