Genesee County, N.Y. (WKBW) - Matthew Kwiatowski went to Indian Falls in Genesee County for some warm weather fun but then it got dangerous. The West Seneca native and his friends were in the water when Kwiatowski fell into the gorge.
Pictures from the Batavia news captured the entire ordeal. The rapids were intense. Rescue crews pulled the teen from the water, put him on a stretcher and Mercy Flight transported him to ECMC. Kwiatowski suffered head and back injuries. It took rescue teams nearly two hours to pull this off.
Indian Falls is much like the nearby Zoar Valley, full of steep and very dangerous cliffs. Rescue teams are called out to these places every spring, summer and fall. Year after year, emergency crews sound a warning bell.
"Very dangerous area. All the time we have young people coming back, falling over the bank, getting hurt, getting killed," Land Owner Dick Clark said.
These situations are also very dangerous for rescue crews who risk their lives to save people who stray off path. They often charge people who break the rules. As for Kwiatowski, he and his friends may face charges.
