BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - After gruesome murder of one of their own, local cab drivers are taking extra precautions.
The tight-knit community of cab and limo drivers in Buffalo is reeling after a driver's body was discovered in the back seat of his own taxi.
Police released the name of the cabbie late Wednesday night. Mazen Abdallah, 55, was shot, according to sources.
Now cab drivers are doing everything they can to stay safe in what has become a very dangerous business.
At Liberty Cab's Kenmore Avenue headquarters, dispatchers use GPS to keep track of every taxi on the road.
"We want to send a message to the public that the days are gone, technology is here and we're going to utilize this technology and we're going to get the bad guy off the street," said William Yuhnke, president of Liberty Cab.
Yuhnke said his drivers have also seen an uptick of violence lately, especially in the neighborhood where Abdallah's body was found on Norfolk Avenue near Kensington.
Abdallah was sent to the area at 4:45 a.m. to pick up a fare and never checked in with dispatch.
A fellow cab driver found his body in the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car at 7 a.m.
Abdallah was employed by Airport Taxi Service.
Police are still looking for suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the Confidential Tip Line at (716) 847-2255.
