This morning, the New York Public Interest Research Group released its annual "TROUBLE IN TOYLAND" report. It is the 25th year for the report. It lists toys that have high levels of lead or toxic chemicals and ones that present a choking hazard. There are seven toys in this years report:
-BABY TOYS BABY DOLL
-DORA THE EXPLORER BACKPACK by Global Design Concepts
-BRIGHT STARTS TRAVEL TAILS BOOK
-PLASTIC HANDCUFFS WITH SKU #7565602150
-WILD RANGER TOY GUN
-LOKMOCK, BABY'S FIRST TRAIN by Haba
-LET'S GET BUILDING! CONSTRUCTION PLAYSET by Fisher Price
The toy industry responded to NYPIRG's report by saying that all toys sold in the United States have to meet tough safety requirements.
NYPIRG is petitioning the Consumer Product Safety Commission to adopt stricter regulations for toys. In particular, they would like the CPSC to increase the size of the "Choke Tube" which determines if a toy could be a choking hazard. NYPIRG representative Jena Heimerl says they would like to see the CPSC "Choke Tube" increased in diameter to the size of a toilet paper tube.
