SOUTH BUFFALO (WKBW) Let the chocolate flow! It was all hands on deck for one of the sweetest days of the year at both the Park Edge Sweet Shoppe and Ko-Ed Candies, both on Abbott Road in South Buffalo.
"It's a very busy day compared to the average day. Much busier," Sandra Whitt, owner of Ko-Ed Candies said.
"We made about a thousand pounds of sponge candy for today," co-owner of the Park Edge Sweet Shoppe Anna Hartog said.
Customers grabbed their sponge candy, truffles, or chocolate covered strawberries. Owners said many of them are usually men, and most of them just in time.
"Sweetest day seems like much more of a last minute holiday, so we have everything all ready, pre-wrapped, right out the door for everyone," Hartog said.
"Most of our holidays are women, but Sweetest Day is mostly husbands and boyfriends. They like to come in and get something for the people they care about," Whitt added.
So how do two candy stores, just two blocks apart, share one holiday?
"We are competitors, but we're friendly competitors, and we're happy they're there," Whitt said.
"And it's been like this for over 20 years, so there's obviously enough business in the neighborhood to have two chocolate shops," Hartog added.
And after weeks of preparation in melting, shaping, and wrapping up all that candy, giving people a way to show how much they care is enough for these chocolate connoisseurs.
That and a little of the sweet stuff for themselves.
