Amherst (WKBW) Police are searching for a suspected purse snatcher in the Town of Amherst, and are looking for the public's help. Police say the original purse snatching happened near the Tops Friendly Markets location on Transit Road and Maple. Hours later, police say a suspect who matches the description given by one of the victims was seen using the stolen credit cards at a store just up the street.

Security video shows the suspected purse snatcher and possible accomplice in a Wegmans store in Amherst. Police say a woman was robbed just up the street from the Wegmans store that the video was taken.

Detective Lieutenant Ronald Farszmil of the Amherst Police Department tells Eyewitness News he believes the suspects didn't even think about the security cameras in the grocery store.

"I'm sure they thought that there was no way that we would discover where they used the cards, or get video available to us. But the bottom line is that they should be aware that were always watching," he said.

This robbery comes after a spike in the amount of purse snatchings in Niagara Falls.

Police are advising all people to keep a watchful eye on their surroundings.

"Obviously the more aware you are, the better off we are. And a lot of the incidents that are occurring are happening in the suburbs, where the people have let their guard down already, so we're just trying to heighten their awareness to increase their safety," Detective Farszmil said.

And though the suspects are still on the loose, police had a strong message for them.

"Be ready and be aware, because in this day and age, you're on video everywhere. If we have the opportunity we will follow up. We may not get you at the scene but we may get you later on. So whatever we have available to us we will utilize, and will expend the manpower to go and get them," Detective Farszmil added.
