Suspect Still at Large in Niagara Falls Police Shooting

Niagara Falls- The Niagara Falls Police Department has released the following information:

This morning at about 3am, the Niagara Falls Police responded to 911 calls regarding shots being fired between a red car and green van.

Shortly thereafter, the patrol division responded to a call of a motor
vehicle accident at 9th Street and Ferry Ave involving a green van. Upon officers arrival on scene, the green van was found to have a gunshot hole on the passenger side of it. Two passengers of this vehicle were interviewed by police.

A short time later a vehicle fitting the description of the red vehicle was located at 15th Street and Ferry Avenue. As officers approached, the passenger of the vehicle fled on foot.

As a NFPD officer gave chase, the suspect fired one shot from what appeared to be long gun at the chasing officer. The shot missed the officer and the officer returned fire. At this time it is believed the suspect was not hit. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for Vehicle and Traffic Law violations and Unlawfully Fleeing from the Police.

The driver who was arrested is identified as Rashaun M. Dix of 439 26th Street Apartment 1.

An extensive search for the suspect was conducted with the assistance of the Niagara County Sheriffs Office K9 Unit and the New York State Parks Police. The suspect has not been located. He is described as a black male about 6 foot tall.

NFPD Detectives are conducting an active investigation into the incident. Several parties were interviewed and leads are being followed. The NFPD Crime Scene Unit, Office of Professional Standards and NFPD Traffic are assisting in this investigation.
