Surge of Car Break-ins Hits Cheektowaga

July 28, 2014 Updated Jul 28, 2014 at 3:10 PM EDT

Cheektowaga, NY (WKBW) The Cheektowaga Police Department has issued a warning to residents to lock their car doors following a rise in car break-ins in the past few weeks.

In almost all incidents, the doors of the burglarized vehicles had been left unlocked overnight. Officers say most of the incidents happened in private driveways in the early morning hours, when the owners of the vehicles were asleep.

The thefts have not been limited to any particular neighborhood, so Cheektowaga police officers have increased patrols in marked and unmarked police vehicles and on bicycles in all residential areas.

Along with increased patrols, officers say there are a few steps residents can take to protect themselves. First, police advise vehicles to always lock their cars, and to keep any valuables out of sight. Residents can also check outside occasionally and report suspicious activity to police. Residents should not approach a suspicious person.

Officers say several arrests have been made in the weeks since this crime surge began.
