Holding Center Inmate Dies After Suicide Attempt

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - The Erie County Sheriff's Office reported that an 18 year old male inmate was discovered hanging in his Erie County Holding Center cell by a bed sheet at approximately 1:30a.m. Sunday morning.

Late Monday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Erie County Sheriff's confirmed that the 18 year old male died at Buffalo General Hospital.

On Sunday when the inmate was initially found, the housing deputy, and other responding officers, immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. CPR was continued by Holding Center personnel until the inmate was transported to Buffalo General Hospital.

The Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau and Professional Standards Divisions are investigating this incident to ensure that all personnel followed required policies and procedures.

The 18 year old inmate was arrested by the Buffalo Police Department and brought to the Erie County Holding Center on August 19, 2011. He was being held on $50,000 bail in relation to a Robbery with a deadly weapon, Menacing, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Forgery charges.

His identity has not been released at the time of this posting.
