Study: U.S. Blood Supply Could be Threatened by Tick-Borne Parasite

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Protection reports that an uncommon tick-borne illness may be creeping into the U.S. blood supply, according to a USA Today story.

The parasitic infection -- babesiosis -- is transmitted through a tick bite or during a blood transfusion. According to the story, there is not an approved screening test for blood donors. Many people have no symptoms so they don't realize they are infected when they donate blood.
