State Police Warn of Growing Drug Trend

October 6, 2012 Updated Oct 6, 2012 at 1:09 PM EDT

BATAVIA, NY (WKBW) New York State Police are warning of a disturbing trend in illegal drugs.

According to the department's Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team, or CCSERT, teams have responded two more than twice as many clandestine drug labs so far in 2012 than in all of 2011.

CCSERT responded to 45 labs, like those used to make methamphetamine or "meth," in 2011. The team has responded to more than 100 so far in 2012.

The trend has grown especially in Western New York. Troop A, which covers the 8 counties of Western New York, had only 2 meth lab busts in 2011. So far in 2012, CCSERT has been involved in 14 busts.

State Police in all of New York State were involved in less than 5 drug lab investigations in the entire ten year span of 1989-1998.

CCSERT is a specialty unit within the State Police that responds to any crime scene with the risk of nuclear, biological, chemical, or explosive contamination.
