BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - State Education Commissioner John King has canceled his entire upstate tour after receiving the full force of parent backlash at his first stop in Poughkeepsie last week.

King was scheduled to make a stop in Williamsville later this month to meet with concerned parents about the new state testing standards many parents believe is too complex for their children

The first session in Poughkeepsie was the first of what would have been five meetings held in different parts of the state to discuss the new standards.

Parents became furious with King by booing and heckling him. King said the new standards prepare students for the future, while parents at the meeting said the Common Core is not age-appropriate, and puts undue stress on their children.

In a statement, Kind said the meeting was taken over by "special interests," and that he was working on finding a way to hold another meeting that will be more productive.
