"Stand Your Ground" Controversy

March 27, 2012 Updated Mar 27, 2012 at 9:05 AM EDT

ALBANY, N.Y. ( WKBW ) New York State Senator George Maziarz is caught up in controversy. There is concern over a new bill he is proposing that has a connection to the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

NYS Senator Maziarz is sponsoring a bill to create a "Stand Your Ground" law here in New York, similar to one already in place in Florida.

Several of his colleagues in Albany have sent Maziarz a letter demanding he drop his efforts.

The reason? The law, which gives residents a right to use deadly force under certain circumstances, is under debate after Trayvon Martin, a black unarmed teenager, was shot and killed by a resident in a Florida neighborhood.

Eyewitness News will seek comment from the Senator, after seeing how this controversy is picking up comment in a capitol web blog.
