LAKEWOOD, NY (WKBW) - Residents in the Village of Lakewood voted by a 3-1 margin Wednesday not to dissolve their village in to the Town of Busti.
With about 55 percent of the registered voters turning out, residents voted 848 'no' to 353 'yes' in the resolution to dissolve the village. The measure was put forward by a local Lakewood resident, and was not headed-up by downsizing advocate Kevin Gaughan.
Had the measure succeeded, the office of the mayor and the village board would have been eliminated.
Lakewood Mayor Anthony Caprino said he was "extremely pleased," with outcome, which he said was anticipated, and added that downsizing has a place in some communities, but in the case of Lakewood, they, "picked on the wrong town."
