Southern Tier Crash Claims A Life

TOWN OF POLAND, NY ( release ) The Chautauqua County Sheriff's office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident which occured at the intersection of Hartson Road and Stone Road in the Town of Poland.

A female operator was traveling west in a 2001 Mazda passenger vehicle on Hartson Road with a male front seat passenger when she failed to stop at the intersection of Stone Road.

The operator did apply her brakes as she passed through the "T" intersection, but was unable to stop.

She left the roadway traveling over an embankment, striking a large tree head on, coming to rest in the waters of Cassadaga Creek.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene along with deputies and members of the Chautauqua County WET. The male passenger was removed from the vehicle and transported to WCA Hospital for treatment. He was then transported to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA where he is listed in critical condition.

The female operator was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still currently under investigation and further notifications are being made.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Town of Ellicott Police Department.
