Soldier With Ties To WNY Found Dead In Kansas

FORT RILEY, KANSAS ( The Capital Journal / WKBW )— Authorities are investigating the death of a Fort Riley soldier who was found unresponsive Monday, the army base said in a statement Wednesday.

Pvt. Thomas Lavrey, 21, was pronounced dead at Irwin Army Community Hospital in Fort Riley after being found unresponsive in his living quarters. The cause of his death is under investigation.

In an emotional interview, the mother and sister of Pvt. Lavrey told Eyewitness News that they are in contact with the base to get more details on the investigation. The family is making funeral arrangements at this time.

Lavrey was a utilities equipment repairer assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.

Lavrey, a West Seneca, N.Y. native, joined the Army in March 2010. He was assigned to Fort Riley in September 2010.
