Evans, NY (WKBW)
He has said it for years. "No ice is safe ice"...and year after year Captain Kevin Caffery from the Erie County Sheriff's department sees people venturing where they shouldn't on Lake Erie.
Friday, Caffery and co-pilot Art Litzinger spotted a snowmobile broken through the ice off of Sturgeon Point in the Town of Evans. The back half of the expensive machine was submerged and refrozen about one quarter mile from shore.
Town of Evans police located the operator who was safe and on shore. Police say the owner of the sled was trying to figure out how to get his snowmobile out of the large crack it had fallen into.
Caffery mentioned that the ice pack off of Lake Erie has frozen poorly this year due to high winds and varying temperatures.
Additionally, Caffery has seen used Christmas trees stuck in the ice, being used as markers, helping guide fisherman around or past dangerous areas on the Lake. These can be seen from Hamburg Town Park and along the Pinehurst area of the shoreline.
"What they don't realize is that the breaks and cracks can change overnight and in some cases, a matter of minutes." Caffery again warns ice anglers.
EWN will monitor the ice fishing season and any rescues that take place on Lake Erie.
