BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) The first work day of 2014 is getting off to a wintry start.

Commuters on all the major routes into the City of Buffalo found very slow going as snow-covered roads made travel treacherous.

For pedestrians, it is a day to be well-bundled up as blowing snow and frigid wind chills make being outside challenging.

It is also the first day back to school for many children after the Christmas break, and health officials at the Erie County Medical Center are advising parents to bundle children up, keep them inside as long as possible, and to go outside with a child to a bus stop to be able to determine just how cold it is.
