WATERFORD, CONN. (WKBW/GrotonPatch) - A 74-year-old Buffalo Pilot flying a kit plane was forced to make an emergency landing into a marsh near a beach in Waterford, Connecticut on Monday.

Kenyon Riches was flying his plane to visit his daughter in Connecticut Monday, but just 10 miles from the Groton-New London Airport, his plane malfunctioned.

Riches then made, what witnesses call an unbelievable and graceful crash landing. It appears his engine stopped working in mid-air causing him to crash. The 74-year-old walked away with just a few scratches and was able to avoid a nearby beach where there were several people. Family members say the Buffalo native has more than 50 years of experience as a pilot. Federal Aviation Administration officials were also on the scene following the emergency landing. No word on what caused the malfunction.
