Skimming Credit Card Thieves Caught

West Seneca, NY (WKBW-TV)

The West Seneca police arrested three Asian males from the New York City area last night at the Wegmans Store, 370 Orchard Park Rd. West Seneca, NY. The men had purchased large amounts of pre-paid gift cards using fraudulent credit cards likely produced by “skimming.” (Skimming is when a credit card number is electronically captured using a secreted device, then the information is transferred to another credit card and used to make purchases or withdrawal from the skimmed account.)

The men are suspect in a statewide investigation covering numerous jurisdictions in NY and PA. A Wegmans store security officer was alerted when he observed the males making large purchases with multiple credit cards. The men were taken into custody and charged with multiply charges including: Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd, D/F, Grand Larceny 4th, E/F, Criminal Possession of a Credit Card, E/F, Conspiracy, and Criminal Facilitation. A search of the suspects uncovered over Ten Thousand dollars in gift cards and over Three Thousand dollars in cash.

Bail was set at arraignment at 25,000 cash or 100,000 bond. The three men are being held at the Erie County Holding Center until further proceedings on Jan. 18th at 7:00pm. The Buffalo field office of the US Secret Service assisted in the investigation.

The three suspects are:
1. Huawei Zheng--22 years old
2. Jie Lin-21 years old
3. Chuan Qin Huang- 25 years old
