Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- The sixth annual Citybration event kicks off today in Buffalo, with the focus on the city's developing waterfront.
Residents and visitors are invited to see for themselves the improvements that have been made on the Waterfront, showcasing the “lighter, quicker, cheaper” model of development.
“This year’s fun events will bring people together on the Waterfront for hot air balloon rides, a scavenger hunt, a floating cocktail party, a Canal Side Festival – we’re even serving free Cheerios on the Boardwalk to celebrate 70 years of Buffalo’s iconic cereal,” said event organizer Marti Gorman. “What’s more, The Travel Channel has just given Citybration exclusive rights to premiere the Off Limits’ segment shot inside one of our historic grain elevators, not scheduled to air nationally until June 27. We’ve arranged to project it in the new Riverfest Park amphitheater, in shadow of the grain elevators where it was shot. This is just one example of how Citybration is taking every aspect of Buffalo’s waterfront and creating fun, exciting events for our residents and visitors to enjoy.”
First held in 1907, Buffalo Old Home Week was revived 99 years later in 2006. Renamed Buffalo Citybration, the festival is now in its sixth successful year. It continues to showcase Buffalos assets, highlight opportunity and celebrate successes in order to retain our best and brightest and attract individuals and businesses to our community.
This year, this four-day “party with a purpose” is family friendly, smoke free and wheelchair accessible.
The weekend kicks off on today, with Buffalo Spree Magazine’s Best of WNY party, benefitting Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc.
On Friday, three hot air balloons will provides rides that offer spectacular views high over the Outer Harbor, courtesy of RE/MAX and benefitting the WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Later that evening, Citybration participants are invited to an exclusive sneak preview of The Travel Channel’s Off Limits segment shot inside one of Buffalo’s historic grain elevators, which will not be aired nationally until Monday, June 27. This exclusive preview will be held at the brand new Riverfest Park on Ohio Street, a short distance from the site of the hot air balloon rides and in the shadow of the grain elevators themselves.
Saturday boasts both a Scavenger Hunt that will start at the Pearl Street Grill and take Teams all over the Waterfront and lower Downtown, as well as a floating cocktail party that will launch from Templeton Landing and sail down the Harbor in the evening, complete with waterworks by the historic Edward M. Cotter fireboat.
The festivities conclude on Sunday with a daylong festival at the Erie Canal Central Wharf on Canal Side. The morning begins at 10 a.m. with a free Cheerios 70th Birthday Breakfast on the Boardwalk with Buster Bison and all of Buffalo. All remaining cereal and milk will be donated to the Buffalo City Mission. From there, Canal Side turns into a carnival of activity, with lots of fun for the entire family. Local artists and artisans, a large children’s area, a wellness pavilion, a green expo, and great entertainment on the stage throughout the day. The event tops off with a bike ride along the waterfront, from Canal Side over to Dug’s Dive for continued merriment.
Citybration’s mission is to showcase Buffalo's assets, highlight opportunity and celebrate the city's many successes to help keep our best and brightest here, to bring back those who have left and to attract entrepreneurs and professionals to help grow our community and our economy.
