HAMBURG (WKBW) One full grocery store, three minutes, anything you can fit in a cart, you take home for free. That is exactly what Hamburg resident Chuck Bullock won a chance to do. He donated to the United Way while checking out at Tops last month, and out of thousands of entries, he was chosen to win a shopping spree.
"This is just something little that we can do for all the people that support us. Our motto is living here giving here and that is exactly what we live by," Tops Community Outreach Coordinator Lindsey Zaffarano said.
Chuck chose his wife and good friend to shop for him, and as the countdown hit zero, the two cruised through the store, grabbing as much as they could before time expired.
"Very exciting. I think these two were a little more excited than I was but it was quite the adventure," Bullock said.
"It's very exciting. It's like Supermarket Sweeps. Running through the isles, cheering them on, there's cake after so it's a great time," Zaffarano added.
And after the final buzzer sounded, all those groceries were totaled; six hundred and thirty three dollars worth.
But the best part of this story is the end. Chuck and his team decided that they would donate a majority of their shopping items back to charity.
"Back in our early days, my wife and I have been together for 33 years, and it was tough, it was really tough. And right here in Buffalo was when people helped us out quite a bit, in the early 80s when we had our children. And now it's time to give it back," Bullock said.
