Erie County, NY (WKBW) - An accident Thursday night just before midnight, on Route 219 just off the I-90, causes the death of "Joe", a horse from the Erie County Sheriff's Mounted Division.

According to the Deputy driving the vehicle, the trailer suffered mechanical issues causing the trailer to begin to swerve. As he tried to slow the vehicle in an attempt to regain control, the trailer became unhitched and flipped over, landing on it's side killing the horse immediately.

The Quarter horse, in his mid-20's, worked with the Erie County Sheriff's Mounted Unit for the past decade, and had just finished up detail at the Italian Heritage Festival. He was once owned by Alex Van Pelt, former Buffalo Bills quarterback.

The Deputy was uninjured. Members of the Erie County Sheriff's Office, The West Seneca Police and Reserve Fire Company assisted at the scene. No other Vehicles were involved in the crash.
