BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - As weather begins to turn cold and holidays approach, many Western New York charity groups are focusing on the less fortunate and homeless.

A surprising statistic to most, however, is that 20 percent of the homeless are children, including 2,000 homeless youth in WNY.

Buffalo was one of five cities nation wide to take part in the "Walk to Save the Homeless Youth" on Saturday.

The goal is to raise awareness on the problem of youth homelessness and to make known the available service to those in need in the area.

"In Buffalo alone we serve over 500 homeless youth every year, and we know there are hundreds and hundreds of kids in Erie County that are not getting services because they don't know about Compass House or any of the other services in our area," said Lisa Freeman of Compass House at Saturday's walk.

Many charities and organizations are looking for more volunteers and help from the public as they face possible cuts in funding while the state and Federal governments work to cut their massive deficits.
