Seneca Council Bans Synthetic Pot, Bath Salts

March 13, 2012 Updated Mar 13, 2012 at 11:25 AM EDT

Allegany Territory, Salamanca, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- The Seneca Nation of Indians Council voted Saturday to ban the sale and distribution of synthetic marijuana, bath salts and drug-use paraphernalia on its five territories, including the City of Salamanca.

According to a news release:

The drug regulation vote at Saturday’s regular Council meeting has nothing to do with a U.S. government raid Feb. 23 in Basom, Genesee County, since the Nation ban was in the works for months and that territory is not part of the Seneca Nation.

“This is another good decision for the Seneca Nation and its neighbors, and is consistent with our long-standing aversion to drugs and drug-related instruments,” said Nation President Robert Odawi Porter. “These drug-related substances have no place around children and are not in the community’s best interests.”

The Nation’s territories include Allegany, on which the City of Salamanca sits; Cattaraugus, near Silver Creek, Irving and Gowanda; Buffalo Creek in downtown Buffalo; Seneca Niagara in Niagara Falls and Oil Spring near the Village of Cuba.

As an indication of how extensive these types of products are, the resolution prohibits the following:

“No person or business licensed under Nation law or otherwise conducting business on Nation Territory shall sell or otherwise distribute any product marketed or branded as ‘herbal incense,’ ‘herbal smoking blends,’ ‘bath salts,’ ‘fake marijuana,’ ‘plant food,’ Blaze, Blizzard, Bloom, Blueberry Haze, Blue Silk, Bonsai Grow, Cloud Nine, Dank, Demon Passion Smoke, Hawaiian Hybrid, Ivory Wave, Kronic, K2, K3, Lovey Dovey, Lunar Wave, Magma, Ninja, Nitro, NRG-1, Ocean Snow, Ono Budz, Panama Red Ball, Puff, Purple Wave, Sativa Herbal Smoke, Red Dove, Scarface, Skunk, Snow Leopard, Spice, Star Dust, Ultra Chronic, Vanilla Sky, Voodoo Spice, White Lightening, Zohai or Zoom.”

Drug paraphernalia includes pipes, water pipes, roach clips and the like. Exempted are ceremonial pipes used in healing and prayer, and traditional observances, as well as traditional pipes as an artform.
