EVANS, NY (WKBW) - Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Route 5 and Revere Drive in the Town of Evans Monday morning where a school bus struck and killed a pedestrian. The investigation revealed that Ronald Wattie, 49 of Evans, N.Y. was attempting to cross Route 5 when he was struck by a Lake Shore Central School bus making a left turn off of Revere Drive. Town of Evans Police say, both the operator of the bus and Mr. Wattie had green lights. The bus was full of students on its way to Lake Shore Middle and High Schools.
"The victim was in the cross walk and had the green light," said Town of Evans Police Captain Charles Danzi. "The bus also had a green light. The bus was making a left onto Route 5 from Revere and the pedestrian was walking at the same time."
Wattie was transported to Lakeshore Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Friends say Wattie was a volunteer firefighter at Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company and was well known and well liked in the community. Students were transferred to a second bus that transported them to school. Officials at Lake Shore Central School District tell Eyewitness News grief counselors and other support services were immediately offered to all of the students on the bus. The driver's name is being withheld while the investigation continues into this tragedy.
