OLEAN, N.Y. (WKBW) For the staff, students, and faculty at Saint Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, hearing that the new Pope had chosen the name "Francis" was a welcome surprise.

"The majority of the people that I've spoken to, particularly here in this Franciscan atmosphere, are ecstatic that he took the name Francis," said Fr. Francis Di Spigno, OFM, executive director of the university ministries.

Reaction around campus reflected an excitement about the new Pontiff and his chosen name.

"People are just bubbling. We were watching it yesterday and they are just so excited," added Tammi Attwell, a Saint Bonaventure employee.

St. Francis of Assisi is one of the best known, and perhaps, one of the most loved Catholic Saints.

During his lifetime in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, Francis dreamed that God called him to rebuild his church.

It is a theme that many think the new Pope is hoping to copy.

"It is my hope that a Jesuit picking the Franciscan name will be a bridge builder and he will be able to usher in a new time for us," commented Fr. Di Spigno.
