BUFFALO (WKBW) The Sabres lost twice on Saturday. One on purpose, as they traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the St. Louis Blues. The other, not so much, as they fell at home to the Washington Capitals.
Starting with the trade, the Sabres decided to move the veteran defenseman before April 3rd's trade deadline. The Sabres will receive a 2nd round pick and a conditional 5th round pick in next year's draft. Leopold played three season in Buffalo, his last struggling with injuries and inconsistent play.
Then the team had to turn around and play a game. With Jhonas Enroth in net and behind 2 goals from Ville Leino, the Sabres jumped out to a 3-1 lead on home ice. But they could not protect the lead, giving up 2 goals in the third period. The game would move to an overtime and then a shootout, where Alexander Ovechkin would end things with a shootout goal to give Washington a 4-3 victory.
The Sabres picked up one point to move to 32 on the season. The team remains in last place in the Northeast Division, and return to action on home ice on Sunday with a matchup against division rival Boston.
