BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Roswell Park Cancer Institute is world renown but now they have another achievement to add to their list.

The hospital was awarded the Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence. Only six percent of hospitals nationwide receive this award. Roswell is the only freestanding cancer center in the state that has this recognition.

Chief Nursing Officer Maureen Kelly said the award recognizes innovative nursing practices and overall quality of patient care.

"We said this is the Nobel Peace Prize for nursing. There are so few people that attain this award. For us to get it on the first try, not only to get it on the first try but I think you heard the woman giving accolades to us that said you raised the bar," Kelly said.

The award is also a benchmark for consumers to measure quality of care. Officials said in Magnet hospitals patient's outcome is better and their stay is shorter than in facilities without that status.
