Buffalo, NY (WKBW) - In Western New York, many know Roswell Park Cancer Institute for its specialized treatment of cancer patients. Now, it is getting national honors too.
A new list from the U.S. News and World Report lists Roswell Park Cancer Institute as the 41st best hospital in the United States for its cancer care. While the 50th best hospitals are ranked, the list looks at the 900 hospitals nationwide that specialize in cancer.
Roswell Park gets big points for patient volume. It treats thousands of people from all over Western New York. There are also patients from nearly 40 other states and countries in the Middle East, South Africa and Europe.
It also got extremely high marks for its nursing staff and advanced technologies.
The hospital's President and CEO, Dr. Donald L. Trump, says he takes pride in its recognition for survival rates.
"We offer services as an NCI center that aren't possible to be developed in the many other hospitals in Upstate NY," Trump says. "Those are often the sickest patients, and yet our outcomes have been excellent."
Roswell Park hopes its goal of focusing on treatment and cures will move the hospital into the top 10 in the upcoming years.
Trump says research is crucial for the hospital.
Right now, the hospital is focusing on genomics. A new center studies genes from cancer patients and their family members who are healthy, so that doctors can form individuals treatments.
Another research program takes a close look at patients immune systems.
"We're now developing new vaccines for brain tumors, otherwise untreatable tumors," Trump says.
There is one area that Roswell did not rank high -- patient safety. The hospital is trying to figure out where those numbers came from and how it can improve in that area.
Other local hospitals ranked high in New York State. Sisters of Charity Hospital ranks as the 31st best hospital in New York. Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Olean General Hospital tie for 39th best.
