LAKEVIEW, NY (WKBW-TV) - For the roughly 200 students that attend the Southtowns Catholic School, they are enjoying a snow day or as Principal Judith MacDonald puts it, "the roof coming off the building day."
Gusty winds of almost 70mph Tuesday evening tore portions of the roof off the school landing in the playground area. MacDonald really had no words to describe what she saw.
"It's kind of daunting," MacDonald said, "to see the whole roof laying, some of it's hanging from the school, and the rest is down there. it's very extensive."
Members of the building and grounds crew are looking over the situation and a temporary roof is expected to be on the nearly 40-year-old building later this afternoon.
MacDonald says students will be informed about Thursday's classes later this afternoon through the school's automated dialing program.
