TORONTO (WKBW) It was a whirlwind of news involving the Buffalo Sabres, long-time head coach Lindy Ruff was fired, Ron Rolston was hired as the Sabres new interim head coach, and the team headed north for a matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. But the rival Leafs would spoil Rolston's debut, as the Sabres recent slump continued with a 3-1 loss at the Air Canada Centre.

Early on, it looked like it could be a good night for Ron Rolston's club. Tyler Ennis put the visitors on the board with six minutes left in the first with a top corner wrister. But that was all the scoring the Sabres would do.

The second period woes would continue for the Sabres, who gave up a slapshot by Dion Phaneuf early, followed up by a James van Riemsdyk two-on-one goal.

In the third, things would get chippy. First John Scott would fight, followed by his shorter counterpart Nathan Gerbe taking on the Leafs captain Phaneuf.

On the two man advantage in the third, the Leafs would put the Sabres away, as van Riemsdyke scores easily. The Leafs hang on to win 3-1 over the Rolston-led Sabres.
