ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities have identified the Rochester police officer killed during an exchange of gunfire with a fleeing suspect.

Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli says the slain officer was 32-year-old Daryl Pierson. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Pierson was an eight-year veteran of the force and the first member of the city's police force to be killed in the line of duty since 1959. He was shot during the chase just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ciminelli says the suspect was wounded in a gunfight with officer Michael Dipaola, who apprehended him. A bystander has injuries that aren't life threatening.

Pierson died at a hospital. The condition of the suspect wasn't immediately available. More information is expected to be released later Thursday.
