Here is a copy of a statement Eyewitness News received from the Buffalo Public Schools:
STATEMENT: Riverside High School
During a routine check of a 10th grade student’s locker, school security personnel located a gun. A 911 call was immediately placed, and all students remained in their classrooms until the Buffalo Police Department arrived to remove the weapon.
According to school security, the student who brought the gun to school said he had no intention of using it to harm anyone on school grounds, but felt he needed it for protection in his neighborhood. The student, who lives in the Bailey Genesee area of the city, is in custody of the police with charges pending.
At no time do we condone the use of weapons or violence. Any and all students who feel threatened in school or beyond should bring it to the attention of an adult within their school immediately.
I would like to acknowledge the swift response of our security personnel and the Buffalo Police Department, along with the support of our administration, teachers and students, which resulted in the safety and security of everyone within the building. Our entire staff was effective in monitoring our students, who in turn cooperated fully.
