The idea to sell the Chautauqua County Nursing Home came from County Executive Greg Edwards. Edwards hopes the profits from the potential sale will help cut a $14 million budget deficit facing the county next year.

CSEA Union workers protested the potential sale of the facility which is located in Dunkirk Wednesday night. The facility is home to more than 200 residents and 280 workers, including 185 fulltime union workers with benefits.

County Legislator Robert Duff is against the idea of selling the nursing home and accuses County Executive Greg Edwards of being blinded by dollar signs.

County lawmakers argue that hiring a marketing firm to help find a buyer would help make up $1.6 million the county says it has lost on the home this year, that number is expected to rise to $3 million next year.

County legislators voted 13 to 11 to table the issue until further notice.
