ALABAMA, NY (WKBW) - Four first responders and a hunter were rescued from icy waters in the Town of Alabama in Genesee County on Sunday.
The hunter, who was walking on the frozen swamp of the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and became trapped, called for help just after 2:30 p.m.
Firefighters from the Alabama Vol. Fire Co. went out to rescue him, but quickly found that they too were trapped and unable to reach safety.
First responders from four counties were called in to help, including the Wolcottsville Vol. Fire Company's Cold Water Rescue Team.
Eventually, after the sun went down, the Erie County Sheriff's Air One chopper was called in.
The helicopter rescued three of the men, including the hunter who suffered hypothermia, pulling them to safety. The two remaining men were rescued on the ground by fellow firefighters.
