FREEDOM, NY (WKBW) - A 27-year-old man has died after attempting to rescue a co-worker who had become overwhelmed by methane gas at a southern tier dairy farm.
State Police say 46-year-old Edward Kelsch was attempting to clear a blockage in a manure spreader and become overwhelmed by methane fumes. At that time, 27-year-old Timothy Schwab entered the tanker to assist Kelsch and was also overcome by the fumes.
Both men were then extracted from the tanker by several workers.
Kelsch was transported to ECMC where he remains in critical condition, while Schwab was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville where he was pronounced dead.
State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
