In the wake of a tragic car crash, the classmates, teachers, coaches and family of 12-year-old Imani Gilbert bound together remembering the beloved young boy at a vigil.
This afternoon, his fellow eighth graders at Herbert Hoover Middle School will honor Gilbert once again. Students will participate in a walk, and they're all asked to sport the number 7 - that's the same number the Gilbert wore when he played his last year for the Town of Tonawanda Football Association.
Tragedy struck on August 22nd when a car hit Gilbert as he crossed Delaware Road at Sheridan Drive on his bicycle. Gilbert later died from numerous injuries. He was on his way home from football practice that day. He dreamed of following in his father's footsteps - a a semi-pro athlete for the Western New York Dragons.
Gilbert's classmates describe him as a best friend, a free spirit, smart, happy and outgoing.
The walk for Imani will take place today from 3 P.M. until 4 P.M. at Hoover’s outdoor track on Thorncliff Avenue.
