The late former Mayor Jimmy Griffin will be remembered next week with a Run Jimmy Run Charity 5K. All of the pieces for the event are falling into place in a very meaningful way.

Race organizers are teaming up with the Buffalo Bisons on the race since Griffin is recognized in the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame. He was very passionate about the Bisons and worked to build the downtown ballpark.

His daughter Maureen Griffin Tomczak says the route begins at Coca-Cola Field and includes markers along the way that were important to her dad like the waterfront and the Adam's Mark, which he brought in as the Hilton. The finish line is home plate at Coca-Cola Field.

Also, a one mile walk goes from the ballpark to the steps of city hall, which Tomczak says timed out perfectly at one mile, a walk that her father took many times over his 16 years in office.

The Run Jimmy Run Charity 5K is slated for Sunday, July 21st at Coca-Cola Field. It starts at 10 a.m. and is followed by a party and Bisons game at 1:05pm. Partial tickets are available for the party and baseball game.

Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer's Association of WNY. Griffin didn't suffer from Alzheimer's. He was struck with the rare illness CJD, but many of the nurses who cared for him were trained through the Alzheimer's Association.

Special Olympics and the Buffalo City Mission will also benefit from the event.
