BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) The American Red Cross has issued a nationwide emergency request for blood and platelet donors of all blood types, following poor donation turnout in June.
Nationwide, the Red Cross received 50,000 fewer donations than expected last month, amounting to a 10% drop. The organization attributes the drop to summer schedules at high schools and universities, where blood drives are often held. The Red Cross experienced a similar change in donations last June.
The Red Cross invites anyone interested in becoming a blood or platelet donor to call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment. Donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. A blood donor card, driver's license, or two other forms of valid ID are required.
