LANCASTER, NY (WKBW) Three children, all under the age of 5 have died in the past week from drowning in a backyard pool.

The most recent tragedy, involving a 3-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy in Lancaster, who were found unresponsive in their family pool Friday night.

The boy, who was in critical condition died today of his injuries.

Police tell 7 Eyewitness News reporter Hannah Buehler the children may have wandered into the pool on their own. They were last seen in an upstairs bedroom on Friday night playing video games. Their father was asleep.

Police say the family did not have a pool alarm, which helps detect activity inside of a pool, and makes a loud noise.

Pool alarms are required in all pools put in after December of 2006.

7 Eyewitness News Reporter Hannah Buehler has more on how these alarms work.
