Buffalo ranks 40th in April's On Numbers Economic Index, up from 39th in March. Last August, Buffalo ranked 52nd. Strong home values are behind that performance. On Numbers researchers say the price of a typical home in Buffalo Niagara is up almost 7% since 2008. That's the sharpest increase in the nation. 90 of 102 markets actually suffered declines in that same period.
A strong retail sector and a stable private sector also had an impact. Austin ranks number one in the report, which is in this week's Business First.

Certified organic farms in New York State are on the rise in response to the growing concern by consumers about the source of their food, according to a report in this week's Business First. Back in 2001, there were 225 organic farms in NYS, jumping to 829 in 2012. The numbers are from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. That's a small percentage of overall farm production in the state, but still represents a 268 percent increase in just 11 years.
