Snyder, NY (WKBW) - Controversy is brewing over a proposed hotel to be built in Snyder, right near the 290.

The debate is over a $20-million hotel.

Iskalo Development is planning on bringing a Hyatt to Snyder. It would sit behind the Lord Amherst Hotel, near the Main Street exit off of the 290.

The hotel would sit right off of a small pond and directly across from a residential neighborhood.

Tara Paolini, who lives off the pond, says "It really just feels like the citizens rights are completely taken away."

E.J. Butler, who lives a few houses down, says while he loves the area, "If we knew that there was going to be a development that was 20 times the size of our house that was going to be a hospitality complex right in our backyard, we wouldn't have moved here.

Neighbors say one of their biggest concerns is safety of children in the area.

Karen Butler explains "We will see every level -- even the first level of the hotel. So they will all be able to look into our backyard and see our kids playing."

Six families that live across from the proposed hotel site own the pond. They say run-off will damage the ecosystem, kill animals and destroy the pond.

" I mean how would you like it if someone said 'hey, we have a parking lot, it belongs to us and we're going to drain it onto your property," asks Paolini.

Iskalo Development says it has already pushed the hotel further from the pond because of concerns.

A spokesman adds that the quality of run-off water will be better than what it is now.

In the past, some town council members have cited economic growth that the hotel could bring the area.

The Amherst Planning Board is meeting Thursday night at 6:30. The Amherst IDA will meet Friday morning at 8:30. Both meetings are open to the public.
