BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) A special federal primary election is being held in New York State on Tuesday June 26th.

It only affects Republicans, who have to pick a nominee for the 27th Congressional seat, and also a candidate to run against Democrat NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

In March, a judge approved a re-districting plan that was based on census information.

The newly created 27th Congressional District covers 8 counties, 105 towns, and 52,000 square miles.

It has been 40 years since there was a June primary in New York State, and that has many people unaware that an election is about to take place.

State primaries are usually held in September.

Chris Collins, the former Erie County Executive, and David Bellavia, a decorated Iraq war veteran, are hoping to win the Republican endorsement for the congressional seat.

The winner will face off against incumbent Democrat Congresswoman Kathy Hochul.

Congresswoman Hochul is currently the representative for the 26th Congressional District, but that district will become a part of the new 27th District.

Republican voters will also to choose a candidate to run against incumbent Democrat US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Wendy Long, Bob Turner, and George Maragos are the Republican primary candidates for United States Senator.
