DUNKIRK, NY (WKBW) The Dunkirk Police Department has identified the victim killed in a train accident on Sunday afternoon.

Steven M. Jewell, 55, of Park Avenue in Dunkirk, was walking on the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks just west of Main Street in the city when he was struck by a westbound freight train.

Traffic was shut down on Route 60 in both directions into Saturday evening as police conducted an investigation.

Railroad officials confirmed with police that the train was headed from Buffalo to Toledo at the time of the crash. Railroad officials inspected the Norfolk Southern equipment, along with the train, and found all equipment functioning properly.

A review of the train's staff revealed the engineer and conductor followed all procedures properly, and the train was travelling within speed restrictions.

The Dunkirk Police Department is reminding residents living near the tracks to obey railroad signals. It is illegal to walk or drive around activated railroad crossings. It is also illegal to walk along railroad tracks.
