NIAGARA FALLS (WKBW) A rapidly escalating series of police events ended with an officer's weapon fired, two in custody, and one person taken to the hospital.

A police footchase of a suspect in Niagara Falls ended outside a home on Orleans Avenue late Tuesday night. While officers were arresting the individual, authorities say 23 year old Brittany Blenker lunged at an officer who had his handgun drawn.

"During the struggle she grabbed at the gun and it discharged," Niagara Falls Police Superintendent Bryan DalPorto said.

The bullet grazed another woman in the leg who was inside the home at the time. She was taken to a nearby hospital and was released with minor injuries.

"Blenker was charged with (first degree) assault which is a felony, reckless endangerment which is also a felony, obstructing governmental administration, and she was also wanted for outstanding warrants for aggravated harassment," DalPorto added.

The original suspect, Jason Clark, was arrested for a previous violent assault. Clark was also wanted in connection with a stabbing at a Lockport Big Lots last weekend.

Police and Sheriffs then found drugs in the home.

"And there was remnants of methamphetamine, cooking methamphetamine. So that is another avenue that we are looking at now and working that case," Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour said.

Both Blenker and Clark were arraigned in court Wednesday morning.

As part of protocol, police will investigate the firing of the weapon, but officials believe officers did the right thing as the situation quickly escalated, and ended with two suspects in custody.

"This is a dangerous job and unfortunately on occasion things happen. But every precaution was taken, and at this point it seems like our policies and procedures were sufficient," Superintendent DalPorto said.
