Police Arrest Man In Connection With Shooting Involving A Buffalo Police Officer

BUFFALO, NY ( release ) Buffalo police have arrested an individual in connection with an officer-involved shooting incident Thursday night on the city's east side.

The incident began just after 9:30pm on Moselle Street.

Officers assigned to the city's Housing Unit were on patrol, when they observed an individual in possession of a weapon, while he was walking in the middle of the street with another individual.

As the officers began to exit their vehicle the two male suspects fled on foot, in different directions. One of the suspects fled westbound on foot, in possession of an assault rifle.

The pursuit ended in the 200 block of Stevens Street following a struggle between the officer and one the suspects, with the officer apprehending the suspect and recovering the weapon.

At some point during the pursuit, the officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect, identified as 21 year old Joseph L. Craig, of Buffalo.

Craig was arrested and charged with, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, obstruction of governmental administration and criminal possession of a controlled substance - since he was found in possession of two baggies containing crack cocaine.

Craig is currently at ECMC listed in serious condition. Police are continuing to search for the second suspect, who was also believed to be armed with a handgun.

As is the standard procedure when an officer discharges his weapon, the Homicide Squad and Internal Affairs Division of the Buffalo police department were called in to investigate the incident.
