Town of Tonawanda, NY(WKBW) The use of a taser during an attempted robbery in Depew on Tuesday made headlines because it is so unusual but the Town of Tonawanda Police Department are investigaing a seperate crime where a taser was used.
"We recently had a case right in our town here where a suspect used a taser on a victim during the commission of a crime..so we are seeing them here as well.", says Lt. Nicholas Bado of the Town of Tonawanda Police Department, adding that he can't release any more information at this time due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation.
Stunning devices, like a taser or stun gun, are illegal in New York State and it is a misdemeanor to posess one, however, they are not categorized as a deadly weapon or as a deadly instrument. Bado says that there is currently a lot of discussion within law enforcement circles about changing the law to make penalties for using or owning a stunning device harsher.
"There is a lot of discussion currently about whether or not the taser should be re-categorized as a different kind of weapon that would carry a more severe penalty if you were caught with it or used in the commission of a crime..and I think there is some validity to that being explored.", says Bado.
