Town of Bethany, NY (Release)-The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a tractor trailer vs. pickup truck collision which occurred at the intersection of Route 63 and Fargo Road, within the Town of Bethany Friday morning.

The investigation revealed that a 2001 Dodge pickup truck operated by Gene Kelsey, 70, of Oakfield, was southbound on Fargo Road when it failed to stop at the stop sign of Route 63.

He then proceeded into the intersection and struck a tractor trailer head on. The tractor trailer, 2012 International, was being operated northbound on Route 63 by George Volwerk, 51, of Hamilton, Ontario.

Mr. Kelsey was transported by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Michael Snyder was the passenger in the Dodge and was transported to UMMC for his medical attention. Mr. Volwerk was not injured.

New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit conducted a level one inspection on the tractor trailer and found no deficiencies.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office Crash Management Team will be conducting the reconstruction investigation.

Preliminary contributing factors in this collision include the Dodge failing to stop and yield the right of way at the intersection; neither of the occupants in the Dodge were wearing seatbelts.

The continuing investigation will focus on Mr. Kelsey's ability to operate his Dodge while allegedly being under the influence of alcoholic beverages and prescription medication.
