D'Youville College has received approval from the Buffalo Planning Board for its plans to construct a 31-space parking lot at the site of the former St. Mary's Church, on Niagara and Vermont streets, college officials said.
The project still requires approval by the Common Council. A vote is scheduled for next week. The site stretches from Niagara Street to Prospect Avenue, with an entry on Niagara and exit on Vermont Street.
The lot will accommodate general parking needs on the landlocked. lower West Side campus.
The project's approximate price tag is $100,000, and college officials have said they hope it is finished by this October. It will include references to the former church, including an original church bell to be placed at the corner of Niagara and Vermont along with several commemorative plaques and a picture of the church.
The parking lot is the first of three major projects scheduled to take place at the college, including athletic fields off Porter Avenue near the Peace Bridge and renovation of the former Gateway-Longview headquarters on Niagara Street.
